In the “Discovering Coast Community” class one of the things we teach is that the church is a FAMILY. We believe that since we are the Family of God we are especially to operate on the basis of love, trust, respect and responsibility. At this point in the class I often share one of my favorite quotes about responsibility. It is one that my wife Kyla once shared with me and and is something that we have tried to implement in our own family:
How We Work Together
If it’s broken, fix it.
If it’s empty, fill it up.
If it’s open, shut it.
If it’s out, put it away.
If it’s messy, clean it up.
If you can’t, then report it.
Seems pretty fitting for a church family as well, wouldn’t you agree? The truth is, while it may be easier to let somebody else take responsibility for things that need attention, something significant happens when we each step up to do our part. Something special happens in us as we feel ourselves contributing to something bigger than ourselves, and of course something beautiful happens in the family as each member gives their best effort.
So keep your eyes open would you? Stay alert to the needs and concerns that may emerge in the Coast Community Family. And when you see a need – whether it be a piece of trash on the playground that needs picking up, a table that needs to be moved, or a person that needs to be prayed with – don’t look over your shoulder for someone else to take care of it, don’t wait for someone else to do the job. Instead, do what you can, when you can, the very best that you can. After all, that’s what family is for.
I’m so glad I’m a part of the Family of God,
I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I’m part of the Family, the Family of God.
